Dads famous coat!

2001 July

My dad had a certain style to the way he dressed. He always wore trousers, never ever in a million years could we get him to wear jeans no matter how much we tried! Then he'd wear a shirt and jumper combo - ALWAYS! Prehaps the most prominent item of clothing would be his coat. I dont know why but when I remember Dad he's normally wearing his coat. It was dark in colour and in the style of a parker (but minus the fir trims). When we walked together he would put his hands in the big pockets at the front and I would loop my arm in his and walk along side him. I still remember the way the material felt, cold and rough but also really comforting. There is one particular day his coat came in quite useful. It was a warm July day in 2001. Me, Dave, Dad and his 2 grandsons had taken a trip to Cleethorpes. When we went to pick him up that morning I had teased him when he walked out his front door wearing his coat, the sun was alreay warm and there wasnt a cloud in the sky but dad was reluctant to leave it at home - which turned out lucky for him... We set off and Dad read his newspaper as we travelled, we helped with a few of the crossword clues and before we knew it we were at the seaside! Excited, we all piled out the car and started to walk towards the beach. Dad was in front with his 2 grandsons while me and Dave walked behind. It was then I noticed Dad had a hole this size of an orange in his trousers just below his right buttock! Dad was absolutely mortified and insisted we went back to the car straight away before anyone saw, so off we went back to the car parked a few minutes away (laughing as we went!) He was considering staying in the car all day while we enjoyed the visit to the beach but there was no way I'd leave him there. So, I suggested he tied his coat round his waist to cover the hole and there it was - problem solved! Still blushing he agreed it would be a reasonable temporary fix until we got home and we enjoyed the rest of the day. It was later on the way home, Dad found the courage to admit he'd been to the shops that morning for his daily newspaper. To make it worse he'd had to bend over to the bottom shelf in the shop to pick up his paper! He managed to laugh along with us at the thought of anyone that might have been stood behind him at the time he unknowingly exposed his pants! That was so much like Dad, he knew how to laugh at himself and find humour in many things. He had a fantastic laugh that I loved to hear and miss hearing it so much. I'd give anything and everything to share a funny moment with him and hear him laugh one more time. Although 'one more time' would never be enough. I miss you Dad x
